Liz DeBarros

JHUI Certified Ukulele Teacher

My first experience of playing the ukulele was in 2011 on a Princess cruise to Hawaii. A series of serendipitous events helped me continue playing and performing with this wonderful instrument.

In 2016 I enrolled as a student in the James Hill Ukulele Initiative (JHUI) Teacher Certification Program and completed my final, Level 3,  in June 2019.

I have taught a variety of ages (7 - 82) in private lessons at Arbutus Music School in Nanaimo and now concentrate on Group Lessons and Workshops in Parksville at the McMillan Arts Centre.

In October of 2019, I was thrilled to  join the James Hill teaching team at his Harrison Hot Springs "Sing, Strum, Spa" weekend where over 100 ukulele players join together to make one huge ukulele orchestra. https://ukulelehotsprings.com/index.html

I am one of the organisers of the Nanaimo Ukulele Festival, an annual event which attracts over 100 players from all over the Island, Mainland and beyond, to participate in workshops, open mic, sing and strum and a concert with International ukulele stars.

I also play ukulele, bass guitar and sing in a local band, The Revolving Doors, with Bill Naylor, Dean Williams, John Lundine and Ade Barnum. We have performed at Errington Hall, Errington Market, at various private parties and had the privilege of entertaining the SOS volunteers at their 2018 & 2019 Christmas parties. The band also performs at the Nanaimo Ukulele Festival and leads the Sing & Strum.
